Retro rockers are a new range designed around classic timeless looks, simple lines and configurations. They will feel like a familiar old friend, gently carved and hand French polished to be lived in, lightweight, super slick neck and set up, tremendous sounds from carefully chosen pickups, many vintage themselves. I want these guitars to feel like coming home, inspiring and comfortable in equal measure, old songs tumble from the pickups, and new ones appear round the corner.
Steampunk design has arrived at Bear Guitars, and first creations are starting to take shape. Contact me for more info, and to commission your own guitar, every one will be completely different and a unique personal statement
Hear master guitar professional teacher John Sharpe put a clutch of the latest Bear guitars through their paces. All the videos were recorded in the most direct unprocessed way, played through my gorgeous handwired Eli Abbott tweed combo into a Shure Sm57. We recorded them to allow their natural resonance, tone and playability to be heard and shown. It’s about the instruments and their qualities that were on show, so no added distortion or effects, other than the spring reverb. Enjoy!
Fender’s research says half of new guitarists are girls
Certainly there some blisteringly good female blues rock guitarists these days, Samantha Fish, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Ann Popovic to name just 3 for example, who rock harder, show more passion and skill than many of the boys
Look at other role models, the timeless Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, St Vincent and Linkin Poe in the Americana world, and the even Taylor Swift, which also helps understand why there’s such a momentum
So girls, what do you want?
I’d like to design and build some guitars that are more in tune with your specific needs, which enhance your playing and reward your passion with top notch handbuilt instruments, but also are designed to suit your needs
I can think of 3 obvious areas to consider:
…….but there must be more, and I’d love some feedback to help me with this
Please let me know about shapes and finishes, pickups and styles that appeal most
heres a few of my guitars that are super light, slender in their body shape and have grea slim necks - but what more could I be looking at ? Please let me know
4 new guitars now available, and there should be something for everyone here, a big rock monster, a super slick highly figured top, an innovative hollow body 8 string and a crazy unusual hand made Indian paper topped golden child
Here’s some of my new guitars in their closing stages to be unveiled at Kempton Guitar Show this Sunday. Keen observers may notice something a bit unusual with one of them? More to come……..
I’ve been experimenting with real, solid, metal finishes for over 2 years, and have finally perfected the technique to my satisfaction, as can be seen on recent guitars. I can now do this in small areas, engravings or as a whole body, so it can be as flexible as your imagination. Challenge me, give me something to push the idea and take it even further - just get in touch, love a challenge!
Sometimes the wood takes over and decides what shape and finish a guitar will have. This is a case in point, a stunning book match Golden Phoebe top determined the size, and ultimately the colour and varnish. This is only first coat btw. The large knots were so attractive I hollowed out behind them, they will eventually have gold metal leaf in them. I adore this, I suppose it’s a sort of Fat Mojo, (because the wood is Chinese that also references a name that turns up a lot, no idea what it means) It will have a pair of mini humbuckers and one of Sophie Dockx amazing one piece bridges. Love it, but I’m bias. Will be finished to be played at the London guitar show , Olympia, 29/30 sept.
Here is a few more examples of designs and guitars that became what they are, completely unique one off instruments. Because of the wood I used, either the core body wood had a particular grain, depth, or the top demanded that the guitar be a certain dimension to make the most of it.
A whole new take on your favourite coffee shop, this stunning one piece swamp ash Mojo boasts a genuine piece of Brazilian coffee sack in its scratchplate, put an extra zing into your playing! See more here
